LISBON, N.D. — “This is really home,” Connie Zangla said today at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon. “I grew up with one brother — now I have a whole bucket load.”

Zangla, a former Marine Corps private, spent time visiting with North Dakota National Guard Airmen and Soldiers who appeared in Lisbon to deliver gifts and share a holiday meal with veterans living at the home.

“We’re so fortunate to have this opportunity to show our appreciation for those who have served,” said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general. “I truly appreciate the service of the veterans in the room today — those who live here, and those of you who are visiting.”

Sprynczynatyk was one of about 20 Guardsmen who visited with the veteran residents throughout the day.

Tech Sgt. Stacy Lockwood and Tech Sgt. Jessica Gordon, both of the Fargo-based 119th Wing, had an opportunity to play cards and connect with Zangla, who is originally from Great Bend, N.D.
“I’m so proud of you ladies,” Zangla said. “You do the things they said girls couldn’t do back when I was your age.”

Together, Guard members and residents enjoyed a holiday meal that included chicken, carrots, potatoes and pie. After the meal, the Guardsmen handed out gifts — one for each veteran.

Annually, the state’s Army and Air National Guard components take turns with the opportunity to coordinate the event, which has taken place for more than 20 years thanks to the volunteer efforts and personal donations of the Guard members.
