FORT HOOD, Texas - Members of the 9th Air Support Operations Squadron, helped bring Christmas a little early by delivering presents to 12 of their families throughout the local area Dec. 13, 2014.

A Killeen local businessman donated $1,000 to the squadron to help provide gifts for families in need or families who have spouses deployed, said Lt. Col. Langdon Root, the commander of the 9th ASOS. The businessman asked to remain anonymous because he wanted the real focus of this event to be on the idea of helping military families rather than draw attention to himself as a person who donated such a generous amount to the cause.

“The businessman is someone I have developed a working relationship with, and he just has a real heart for the military and children,” said Root. “He was really impressed with how the Air Force takes care of their Airmen and families. This donation was in honor of his grandson just joining the Air Force.”

Kathryn, a spouse whose husband Ben is deployed, said that this was a great opportunity to help bring the 9th ASOS families together and ensure they were able to have an extra special Christmas.

Root said Airman 1st Class Corey Tate, an enthusiastic young man with a love for children, played Santa. Airman 1st Class Devaughn Williams assisted Tate and Root with the gift preparation and delivery.

Tate said the best part about playing Santa was the children’s faces and their reactions to seeing Santa.

“Their faces were great; they were really excited to see Santa come visit them. It was really inspiring,” said Tate.

“When are we ever going to get a chance to do something like this again?” asked Root. “I got a chance to mentor these younger Airmen with something that has so much meaning and impact rather than them sitting inside playing Playstation all weekend.”

“We were just trying to bring a little bit of joy to the families that need it,” said Root.
