BARRIGADA, Guam-- U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Activity Guam (MCAG) delivered approximately 4,700 toys to the Salvation Army and Catholic Social Service Dec. 18.
The mission of the Toys for Tots program is to collect toys during their annual drive and distribute them as Christmas gifts to less fortunate families in the community of Guam and its outlying islands in the Pacific.
“The Toys for Tots campaign is more than just a regular community service event, it is an official activity of the United States Marine Corps and is incorporated in the actual mission,” said Capt. Rafiel Warfield, MCAG Toys for Tots coordinator. “For us, it’s more than just collecting toys; it’s making a difference in a young child’s life; having impact and positively affecting our communities.”
According to Warfield, partnerships with the Guam Chamber of Commerce, the KUAM CareForce, The Sorensen media family and servicemembers throughout the island made this year’s program a record breaking success.
“We have more and more people that want to get involved, and it serves a more meaningful purpose in our community outreach program with the Marines,” said David Leddy, a member of the Guam Chamber of Commerce. “We do our best to make sure Toys for Tots is successful every year.”
Warfield explained that even though the program is not usually held by the active duty Marines, they took ownership of the campaign and their obligation to serve the community.
