IWAKUNI, Japan - Marine administrative message 521/14 announced multiple changes to the enlisted professional military education promotion requirements expected to take effect throughout the next three years, but the one that stood out most was the creation of a Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar.
In order for lance corporals to be eligible for promotion to corporal, they were only required to complete the Leading Marines Marine Net course, but effective Oct. 1, 2015, Marines will also be required to complete a command-sponsored lance corporal seminar.
Some units already began hosting seminars aboard station. Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron hosted their first Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar, Dec. 15 – 19, 2014.
The weeklong seminar focused on interactive ways to prepare future noncommissioned officers for their role as leaders.
“The seminar is not a typical Marine Corps class, not a ‘death by power point’ kind of approach,” said Sgt. Brandon Webster, an instructor with the H&HS Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar. “It’s a discussion-based seminar. We give them topics and let them talk about it and discuss their opinions as adults amongst peers.”
According to Webster, the course syllabus allows instructors to guide the class while the lance corporals learn from their seniors and peers.
“This course gives us the full ability to discuss topics thoroughly, which allows us to grow as leaders and professional Marines,” said Lance Cpl. Kaine R. Brewer, a student with the H&HS Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar. “We look at a topic from the perspectives of a leader, a follower and as a person in that situation.”
Brewer and Webster agree that the seminar is a welcome addition to the Leading Marines course.
“While Leading Marines gives them a glimpse into the leadership mindset, here they get a week to focus solely on leadership, to grasp it, and see where they stand on a peer-to-peer level,” said Webster.
Although the seminar is not a promotion requirement until October, Brewer said he would highly recommend future corporals enroll.
“Individuals who go through this course are going to learn a lot about the kind of leader they want to be,” said Brewer. “There are a lot of different leadership methods and not everyone responds to the same style of leadership. During the seminar, they have the chance to decide what kind of leader they want to be and what tactics are available to them.”
