Story by Chief Petty Officer Ahron Arendes

    Commander, Submarine Group Nine

BANGOR, Wash. - Ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) and guided-missile submarine USS Michigan (SSGN 727) were announced as the Submarine Group 9 recipients of the 2014 Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Battle Efficiency Award (Battle "E"), Jan. 1.

Maine’s Blue and Gold crews won the Battle "E" for Submarine Squadron 17, while Michigan’s Gold Crew was named the Battle "E" for Submarine Squadron 19.

Maine Gold and Michigan Blue both earned the Weapons Readiness White "W” and the Personnel Readiness White "P.” Maine Gold also earned the Strategic Readiness White "S" and the Supply Readiness Blue "E," while Michigan Gold won the Navigation/Operations Readiness Red and Green “N” in the Battle “E” competitive areas.

Since becoming a part of Submarine Group 9 in 2005, this is the third Battle “E” award for Maine. Both Blue and Gold crews previously won in 2007 and in 2012.

This is Michigan’s third award since conversion to an SSGN in 2006. The Blue crew won it in 2010, and in 2011 the Gold won it.

“It’s just a great feeling. I’m very proud of both Maine crews,” said Cmdr. Bill Johnson, commanding officer of Maine Blue. “We’ve had great teamwork the whole time I’ve been in command, and a huge part of our success is the ability of both crews to work together and work toward our strategic mission."

“The fact we won our second award in three years speaks to the great foundation set the COs before me and how we carry on the great history and legacy going forward,” he said.

Commander of Submarine Squadron 19 Capt. Brian Humm said Michigan Gold’s accomplishment is a result of their great performance over the past year.

"The crew of Michigan Gold can be justifiably proud of their accomplishments this year. They have performed at the highest levels in the most challenging environments," said Humm.

Other submarines won awards in competitive areas as well.

USS Alabama (SSBN 731) Blue earned the Engineering Readiness Red "E” and Navigation/Operations Readiness Red and Green "N" and USS Ohio (SSGN 726) Blue earned the Engineering Readiness Red "E” and Supply Readiness Blue "E."

The Battle "E" is an award of merit presented to the most proficient submarine crew in each squadron and recognizes sustained superior technical performance and continual combat readiness throughout the year. The awards are presented by the commodore of each squadron to the submarine under their command, which has demonstrated the highest level of battle readiness.
