JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. - The U.S. Air Force offers law students from across the country the opportunity to gain hands on experience as a U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General through their internship program at Langley Air Force Base.
The program is open to students with or without military affiliation three cycles per year, in the summer, fall and spring, each lasting for a period of approximately three months.
During the internship, law students see what it is like to work in a professional legal office, specifically a base legal office, said U.S. Air Force Capt. Brian Flanagan, 633rd ABW Legal Office assistant judge advocate.
"One of the goals of the program is to give students, interested in a career as a JAG, the opportunity to see what the daily life of a JAG is like and give the JAG Corps the opportunity to see how the student would do if they were selected to become one," Flanagan said.
Legal students learn through real-life experiences and provide training and instruction to base members. They also learn about military life through the legal office's physical training regiments, customs, standards and courtesies.
Interns learn to provide legal assistance for general law issues such as landlord tenant law and will often write letters on behalf of those clients. They also draft proof analyses for court martial cases and draft direct examinations for witnesses, said Flanagan.
"The program is mutually beneficial, in that the student gives us hard work and a product that, when reviewed by a JAG can go directly out to the base and have a mission impact," he said. "In return, we give him or her experience they cannot get from school and exposure to issues specific to military law, which are not found in a civilian law office."
Mathew Engelbaum, 633rd ABW Legal Office intern, thought it would be advantageous to gain experience as an Air Force JAG.
"Before I started law school I was very interested in applying to become an Air Force JAG," he said. "My law school also requires me to complete an externship for credit and I thought it would be highly beneficial for me to actually experience the day-to-day of a military attorney while also fulfilling my externship requirement."
As an intern Engelbaum provided legal assistance, drafted and reviewed requests and researched a wide range of legal issues.
"Getting hands on experience is extremely beneficial," said Engelbaum. "There are a few elective skills classes that are available at most law schools, but getting real world experience is much more beneficial than any skills class."
To reap the benefits of this program, law students across the United States can apply by visiting www.airforce.com/jag, through their law school career center or by contacting the 633rd ABW Legal Office at 764-3277.
