IWAKUNI, Japan - Heavy equipment operators and combat engineers with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, along with members of Marine Corps Community Services and Matthew C. Perry High School, are constructing a new baseball field aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.
The field is slated to be completed by February 1, 2015, just in time for the school’s baseball season.
“As the air station continues to expand, many things change,” said Dana Gates, facilities and maintenance manager with MCCS. “The ballpark once used by the school, has since been removed to make room for the expanding medical facility, so with that being the case, MCCS and MWSS-171 teamed up to give the school a much needed field.”
Gates added that the majority of the work done so far is credited to the Marines of MWSS-171 as they have surveyed and cleared the area to be used for the field.
“We are out here to help the students and the school,” said Lance Cpl. William Kurth, a heavy equipment operator with MWSS-171.
“As heavy equipment operators, we are always looking for ways to utilize our skills around the air station. Projects like this provide us not only the opportunity to use and improve our own skills, but also gives us a chance to contribute to the Iwakuni community.”
According to Gates, plans for the field are to contain a grass infield and a dirt pitcher’s mound, making it the only Department of Defense Dependents Schools’ in the Far East region to contain these.
“I can’t express my gratitude for the work the Marines are doing,” said Lorenzo Brown, principal of M.C. Perry High School. “They have done so much in the short time we have been working together, any time I have the pleasure to work with Marines they always surpass my expectations.”
Both Gates and Brown added that they look forward to continuing the field construction with the Marines of MWSS-171.
