HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. - Every New Year, millions of Americans make resolutions to begin exercising, eating better and leading an overall healthier life. The first few weeks of the year gyms are crowded, but for many people the motivation ends as soon as quickly as the month of January does.

The 49th Force Support Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base has a competitive way to keep people motivated and to help extend those New Year’s resolutions. The program, based off the popular television show, "The Biggest Loser" runs from Feb. 2- March 31.

“The Biggest Loser competition is an eight-week program where participants dedicate time and effort into fitness and nutrition to see who loses the most body fat,” said Tech. Sgt. Lilliana Harris, 49th FSS Non-commissioned officer in charge of fitness and sports. “We will determine the winners by Bod Pod tests at the end of the competition.”

Before the competition begins, contestants are put into a Bod Pod, where their body fat percentage is determined by calculating their body volume versus their body weight. Each participant is given nutritional information and a workout plan to follow for 57 days. Competitors will have their body fat percentage tested throughout the competition to measure their progress.

"The scale can only tell you how much you weigh,” said Master Sgt. Angel Tanner, 49 FSS fitness center superintendent. “This is the first time we’ve used the Bod Pod for The Biggest Loser. It allows the contestant to see their body fat percentage instead of just what they weigh.”

The goal of the competition is to give participants the knowledge and motivation to reach their fitness goals throughout the year.
“This program helps individuals commit to a routine and healthy way of eating,” said Harris. “With determination and perseverance they will see results, and with results they will stay committed.”

Registration for The Biggest Loser is $20 and is open to all local residents and citizens of the Tularosa Basin until Jan. 31. Prizes will be awarded on April 4 by the 49th Wing commander and the various sponsors from the city of Alamogordo.

“This program is not new, but it might be new to some,” said Tanner. “Because it’s so well-known from the TV show, and it’s open to everyone, we are hoping it can give anyone the motivation to begin their own fitness journeys.”
