MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Aircraft rescue and firefighting Marines honed their firefighting skills during training at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Jan. 22.
ARFF Marines conduct training daily to sustain their techniques but execute simulated, contained live-fire exercises quarterly to maintain proficiency and enhance coordination within the unit. Such training equips the Marines with the necessary tools to respond to mishaps and emergencies at Cherry Point.
“These training exercises allow ARFF Marines to sustain their skills, which enhances the readiness of the Marines,” said Gunnery Sgt. Daniel Laslett, an aircraft rescue firefighting specialist with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271. “They implement fundamentals and work together to complete the objective.”
According to Laslett, each fire is meticulously planned out because they are naturally unstable. The Marines learn how to adjust their training to the elements, fine-tuning their techniques of combating fires since weather conditions and wind increase unpredictability.
“ARFF is the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s quick response unit to any emergency at the flight line,” said Laslett, a native of Detroit. “We train for every scenario, whether it is an aircraft going down or a fuel fire. The Marines are capable of handling various situations in an efficient and timely manner.”
According to Cpl. Anthony Nelson, an aircraft rescue and firefighting specialist with MWSS-271, Marines conduct other training in addition to the controlled fires to maintain their mission focus. They conduct safety drills, inspections, maintenance of gear and vehicles and constant practice of the fundamentals of firefighting.
“We are all part of a bigger picture,” said Nelson, a native of Fargo, N.D. “The skills we have support 2nd MAW and allows them to carry on their missions in a safe environment.”
