NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Sarten, 301st Troop Command Battalion, Tennessee Army National Guard, received the historic NCO sword from outgoing Command Sgt. Maj. Jamie Clark during the 301st TC Battalion Change of Responsibility ceremony held Jan. 10 at Joint Forces Headquarters.

The Change of Responsibility ceremony is a military tradition that serves a dual function - to honor the departing command sergeant major and providing official recognition of the transfer of authority as senior noncommissioned officer of the battalion to the incoming command sergeant major.

Having served as the senior administrative noncommissioned officer for the 230th Sustainment Brigade for the past two years, Sarten said he’s excited about his new responsibilities.

“I am very open, truthful and approachable,” he said. “I want to feel the pulse of the unit; I want to see everything that is going on.”

Leaders who have worked with Sarten describe him as a hands-on leader with a passion for assisting soldiers.

“He is a very hard worker,” said First Sgt. Jill Allen, 301st TC Battalion first sergeant, who has worked with Sarten for two and a half years.

An innate desire to help soldiers succeed is a valuable trait of any leader, one that others say he exudes with his actions. “He is very knowledgeable,” Allen said, “he uses his knowledge to help soldiers with promotion packets and he helped to get soldiers job qualified.”

Clark is the outgoing leader and has held the position for more than three years. Clark said he’s enjoyed working with the soldiers of the 301st and considers his command time here to be a milestone accomplishment.

“This assignment has been the pinnacle of my career,” he said. While he is moving on, he won’t be traveling far; Clark will now assume a position at JFHQ.

Members of the battalion look forward to their new comrade and warmly welcomed him. “He is a very intelligent NCO who makes helping soldiers a priority,” said Lt. Col. Scott Gaines, battalion commander.

As the 301st says farewell to one great leader, they begin the new year by receiving yet another one.
