CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea -- Every Wednesday afternoon, KATUSAs, Korean augmentee’s to the U.S. Army, are not at the office. Where are they? Those who are not familiar with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army schedule may be confused with their sudden disappearance from the office. Don’t worry about a thing. They are at their KATUSA training.

KATUSAs on Camp Humphreys gather at the ROK Support Group office for troop information and education, also known as KATUSA training. Usually, the training is held by the ROK Major. Information is provided by the Korean Ministry of National Defense helps develop security awareness and understanding of the sociopolitical fallacy of North Korea. The ROK Major informs KATUSAs of any future events, checks on proper military attire, and ensures good health conditions for the Soldiers. Afterwards, the KATUSAs play team sports against other units to build a sense of cohesion.

Pfc. Sang Uk Kim, a medical specialist from Headquarters and Headquarters company, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, said, “In KATUSA training we are trained to be mentally, and physically fit for any circumstances. We also conduct tough combative exercises so that we won't physically fall behind.”

On Jan. 28, the Area III Republic of Korea Army Support Group Commander, Maj. Park Seung-Gon, conducted a special KATUSA training at the Camp Humphreys Community Theatre. Maj. Park briefed KATUSAs on important regulation changes.

“During special KATUSA training, Maj. Park Seung-Gon re-embraced our identity as KATUSAs through his well organized speech along with his outstanding presentation skills,” said Cpl. Young Min Jeon, a human resource specialist from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

KATUSAs empower the shared goal to defend the peninsula against the North Koreans and to safeguard democracy held together by the U.S. and ROK alliance for the past 60 years. The successful history of KATUSAs partly comes from the systematic KATUSA training curriculum.

As Cpl. Jeon said, “KATUSA training re-enforces our awareness of our direct enemy, North Korea. Through frequent and detailed learning about our enemy, KATUSAs remind themselves the true purpose of serving the Army. To save the Nation!”
