EBBING AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ark. - Chief Master Sgt. Brenda Herring obtained the distinction of the Air Force's highest enlisted rank during a promotion ceremony held Jan. 11, 2015, at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Fort Smith, Arkansas.

"Herring never ceases to amaze me with her selflessness, her can-do attitude and her compassion for the 123rd Intelligence Squadron members and families," said Lt. Col. Tina Lipscomb, commander of the 123rd IS." Herring is dedicated, motivating and a true asset to the 188th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group."

Herring enlisted in the Arkansas ANG in 1991 and has served for 23 years in a broad array of career fields. She has served as an administration specialist for the 189th Airlift Wing and as an information management craftsman during the Individual Mobilization Augmentee Reserve program attached to Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia and for the 123rd IS. For the past three years she has served as the first sergeant for the 123rd IS at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas.

"Over the past three years it has been an honor to work with Herring," said Lipscomb. "She has been the persistent leader to the squadron, a firm but caring first sergeant, the perfect mentor for the young Airmen and a sound of reason to the officers. I am very proud that Herring has been chosen to be the 188th ISRG chief and she will bring outstanding leadership to the Chief's Council and the 188th Wing."

As the 188th ISRG superintendent, Herring plans on helping Airmen who were already members of the 123rd transition smoothly to working at Ebbing ANGB with the 188th.

"The main thing is not the mission that is changing for most people that are coming from Little Rock, but the location away from what they had been used to for many years," Herring said.

She also would like to help Airmen who were part of the 188th before its transition from the 188th Fighter Wing to the 188th Wing by keeping them inspired and to ensure morale remains high so that they transition to their new mission sets as seamlessly as possible.

"To integrate the 188th members into a new mission, you always have to be upbeat about it," Herring said. "Yes, there are always issues, but for the most part it is a great opportunity. It's something different and it's going to keep them thinking all of the time."

Although attaining chief wasn't a goal she made until she achieved the rank of senior master sergeant, she is thrilled for the chance to lead the 188th ISRG.

"I'm excited and nervous at the same time for this a big opportunity. For me, going in as my first position as a group chief instead of a squadron chief with even more responsibilities and opportunities makes me excited and I can't wait."
