BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota National Guard along with family, friends and community supporters honored about 40 Soldiers from the Bismarck-based 814th Medical Company (Area Support) today during a Freedom Salute ceremony at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck. The event celebrated the North Dakota medics' successful yearlong deployment to Afghanistan from which the unit returned home in November 2014.
"We are so proud of the men and women of the 814th Medical Company for the important mission they completed in Afghanistan and for the outstanding job they performed on behalf of our state and nation," said Gov. Jack Dalrymple. "Today, we officially welcome them back home to North Dakota and thank them and their families for their distinguished service."
Under the command of Capt. Coty Sicble, of Bismarck, the North Dakota Soldiers provided patient transport to base treatment facilities in Afghanistan as ambulance drivers for a 911 support team. They also provided first aid and life-saving care while working at troop medical clinics and sick call care for civilian contractors and coalition forces.
Through the deployment, the unit treated or met with more than 5,550 patients. The Soldiers also helped conduct 76 training events for their medical counterparts, including coalition forces, the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police. Serving during a draw down in forces for the Global War on Terrorism, the 814th Medical Company (Area Support) also was responsible for closing down the Camp Phoenix Troop Medical Clinic in Afghanistan.
"The 814th Medical Company brought a wealth of skills to its medical mission in Afghanistan, and what our Soldiers accomplished speaks volumes about their expertise. Our coalition forces and Afghan partners could rely on the critical, life-saving care provided by our North Dakota medics," said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general. "Our Guardsmen once again went above and beyond and it is great to recognize them for their dedication to duty and service to our nation."
Each Soldier honored today received a gift to present to a family member as thanks. About 10 members of the unit recognized at the event received additional honors for having served on more than one deployment.
While doctors and medical professionals within the state previously have mobilized overseas, the 814th Medical Company (Area Support) is the first large unit of N.D. Army National Guard medical personnel to serve in the Global War on Terrorism.
