    4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. – “It’s just what we do,” said Spc. Michael Charfauros II, a wheeled vehicle mechanic with Forward Support Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, of his native country Guam, shortly before receiving an Armed Services YMCA “Hail to Heroes” award Feb. 6, in Waynesville, Missouri, for his 273 hours of volunteering performed last year.

With wife Suzette in the audience, Charfauros, was flanked on stage by his battalion and brigade leadership as Linda Bright, executive director of the Waynesville Armed Services YMCA and Josh Deavours, board chairman, presented him with a plaque for his achievement.

Charfauros said everyone back home in his village of Mangilao, helps out everybody else whether it’s in a big or small way, and not until he came to the states did he hear what comes naturally to him labeled as “volunteering.”

“I see a lot of volunteering going on here in America as well,” said Charfauros. “I like to spend time volunteering at the [Waynesville] middle school where my wife works and my daughter attends as an 8th grader. With my demanding Army schedule, it’s nice to try to spend a little extra time with them while I’m helping others.”
