JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. -- The Joint Base Lewis-McChord Service member and Family Assistance Center provided a career and education fair for Service members and their spouses at the Warrior Transition Battalion Feb. 12.
The education and career fair provided attendees face to face time with employers and schools to see what opportunities are available for the active duty members once they are finished with their service.
“Today we are providing transitioning families the opportunity to meet with different organizations and see what they have to offer,” said Jane Kessler, a Service member and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) education service specialist. “Our goal is to provide a great transition process for Service members and their families to the civilian work force.”
The SFAC provides an environment where wounded, ill and injured Service members and their families can gather to foster physical, spiritual, and mental healing. The SFAC partners with the Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) to serve as a one-stop shop for services.
“I’m looking to go to school after I get out of the Army, but I figured I would check out the jobs that the Federal Aviation Administration had to offer for the work experience I already learned during my service,” said Spc. Andrew Cooper, an aviation crew chief, 7th Infantry Division. “I learned a lot of different programs I could take advantage of and will be telling Soldiers I’m stationed with to go to these types of events before they get out.”
The Transition Assistance Program, formerly Armed Forces Career & Alumni Program, or ACAP is JBLM's joint-service transition support organization. This program helps Service members and their spouses prepare for a smooth and successful transition from military service into civilian life.
“We hold two of these events a year and we encourage anyone who would like to attend to come,” added Kessler. “The sooner our service members start to educate themselves on this process before they leave the military the better.”
Service members are encouraged to start the Servicemember for Life or SFL-TAP process early, up to two years prior to separation for military retirees and up to 12 months prior to separation for most other personnel.
The JBLM SFL-TAP office is located inside the Hawk Transition Center Building 3271; 2nd Division Dr., Lewis North. Services include career counseling, interview prep and resume workshops, job fairs, and special career recruitment programs Troops to Teachers, Helmets to Hardhats, etc.
