NORFOLK, Va. - Norview High School, in Norfolk, Virginia, hosted its first South Hampton Roads Service Academy and Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Information Day Feb. 14.
The annual event, held at a different location each year, is sponsored and coordinated by the United States Naval Academy (USNA) alumni association’s Hampton Roads chapter and brings in guest speakers from multiple military service academies, including the USNA, to speak on behalf of their institutions.
Events such as these allow potential service academy candidates an opportunity to gain valuable information about the application processes.
“Understanding the service academy application process early in your high school career is very important,” said Bill Daniels, a retired Navy captain and USNA graduate class of ’77. “Events like these help with that process.”
In addition to the service academies, the event hosted several local universities to discuss their ROTC programs for students who are not interested in attending a service academy, but may still want to earn a commission upon graduation.
Cadet Ensign Dustin Matthews, a student at Norview, said it was important for him to be able to gain information about the local universities ROTC programs.
“This is a great program to reach out to the parents and show them what we have to offer around here with the different colleges,” said Matthews.
This is the seventh annual event for the Hampton Roads region. Each year the event is hosted by an NJROTC command at different local area high schools.
The event was also available to active duty service members interested in attending a service academy, as long as they meet initial entry qualifications.
For more information on the event contact the USNA Alumni Association Hampton Roads Chapter.
