FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa.– The Pennsylvania National Guard’s Construction and Facilities Management Office won the National Guard's Fred Aron Award for Excellence in Facilities Programs for being the highest performing program in the nation.
Pennsylvania outperformed 53 other states and territories to win the award. The contest’s board members rate programs on 10 areas: construction, resource management, strategic plans- Installation Status Reporting, facilities management, real estate branches and the sustainability division: energy program. The winner is selected based on the score they received overall.
Lt. Col. Christopher McDevitt, the Pennsylvania Army National Guard construction and facility management officer is proud of his outfit. “The team worked hard, and I’m happy they have been recognized nationally for their achievements. It takes the total commitment of every Soldier, state employee and contract employee working together to produce a quality program and whereas the award is gratifying, it’s the results we provide to the Soldiers who occupy our facilities that matters most. I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by a tremendous staff; like any team there are a small group of superstars who separate one program from the rest, in Pennsylvania the fiscal year 2014 superstars were Maj. Joe Martinkis, Staff Sgt. Susan Dombrowski and retired Col. John Buffington. They made the difference between a good program and a great program.”
The Pennsylvania Construction and Facilities Management Office manages over $2.4 billion in facility assets including: 86 readiness centers, 14 field maintenance shops, two combined surface maintenance shops, two Army aviation support facilities, one unit training equipment site, and nearly 1,000 structures at Fort Indiantown Gap, which includes one national and three regional training facilities.
“We have a large state and a corresponding large number of facilities and projects. It’s gratifying to know that we maintain our excellence despite the large workload, and Pennsylvania is the first of the large states to ever win the award,” said Lt. Col. McDevitt.
Lt. Col. Erick Gordon, the National Guard Bureau installation management chief, said this year’s competition was very tough and very close. “The event is very competitive,” he said. “That Pennsylvania was rated excellent in seven of the 10 areas is impressive given the economic challenges the division faced over this year.”
The award is named for the longest serving National Guard Bureau installations division chief, who served in that position as both a military member and civilian for 21 years from 1971-1992.
