JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. - The power of ideas and the sounds of music marked the day as Airmen and civilians at the Air National Guard Readiness Center held a celebration of Black History Month here Feb. 25.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Derex Griffin, spoke about applying the lessons learned throughout the struggle for civil rights to our mission in the Air National Guard.
"On the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman was trying to lead herself out of a job," Griffin said. "She was always training her replacement to take over, and then put them in positions to lead. And Dr. King didn't hold his march in Selma, Alabama, by accident. He planned every part of it strategically."
Another highlight of the program was a special performance of "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah" by Senior Master Sgt. Eric Evans, Master Sgts. Miesha Nieves and Sarah Harris. To cap off the official observance, attendees joined together in "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
