    310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

FORT HOOD, Texas - The commander of the 377th Theater Sustainment Command, Maj. Gen. Les Carroll, visited the 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) Friday, Jan. 30 to talk to Soldiers at every level about some of his philosophies.

Carroll arrived Thursday just in time to talk to a group 310th Soldiers before they deployed. He met with them immediately following their completion of a long class on foreign weapons. Carroll’s words broke the tension in the room.

“He stamped his message across real quick and then he made light of it and got everyone pumped back up again, he was pretty rambunctious,” said Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Bard a logistic specialist from the 310th SC(E).

The next day, the general met with the main body from the 310th SC(E) and spoke to them about setting the right example and refusing to accept any form of mediocrity. He explained in detail how everything leaders do sets the standard for Soldiers.

Carroll told a story about a visit to a company field exercise.

“I’m standing there looking at the first sergeant,” Carroll explained, “I said, ‘First sergeant, I can tell you what your company looks like before we ever walk around to see your Soldiers. I want you to look in the mirror, you don’t have a helmet band on your helmet, and you don’t even have your rank on your helmet. Look in the mirror that’s the standard that you’re setting, you are accepting mediocrity.’”

Carroll continued with remarks about how everyone, regardless of rank or position, is responsible for setting the standard.

Another example he used to drive his point home about paying attention to even the smallest detail involved Gen. George Patton. Patton used to severely reprimand and even fine officers for not having a properly tied neck tie, Carroll said.

“If you pay attention to everything like that, you don’t have to worry about if their magazine is clean, you don’t have to worry about if they cleaned their rifle today, if you just set a standard and hold them to that standard,” he said. “Whenever you accept mediocrity, that’s the standard, and your Soldiers will meet you there. Wherever you set the bar that is where your Soldiers will migrate to.”
