DEIMBERG, Germany – Building on 30 years of partnership, Soldiers of the 39th Transportation Battalion gathered Feb. 6 to participate in the Glanbruecken Reserve unit’s “Winterbiwak,” the annual winter field exercise.

A jointly- planned exercise, Winterbiwak featured land night military competitions from both U.S. and German forces. During the six-kilometer road march, points and events along the way challenged the Soldiers’ knowledge and abilities. Snow and icy winds added an extra challenging element.

Teams were given night vision devices to locate points from a stationary site as well as conduct reconnaissance missions. The final event challenged all teams to recover a tactical vehicle in less than five minutes, using another vehicle, night vision devices and a tow bar.

“The exercise ran perfectly. It keeps getting better and better each year, especially as more and more 39th teams are involved,” said Guido Hablitz of Glanbruecken, Germany. He is the Glanbruecken unit’s 39th Transportation Battalion partnership coordinator.

He continued, “This was the first time that we have hosted the American units overnight and we all had a great time. We hope to do even more together with the 39th in the years to come.”

“It was great to compete in something like this because it was original,” said Sgt. Antony Trump of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with the 51st Transportation Company. “We had never done a training exercise like this at night, and it made the land navigation all the more challenging.”

The next morning, soldiers from the Glanbruecken reserve unit continued to extend their hospitality by providing breakfast followed by a hands-on demonstration of German weapons assembly and disassembly.

The units departed with new military experiences and camaraderie built within the battalion and across national lines.
