CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq – Professionalism, competence and initiative are the driving points for a non-commissioned officer of the U.S. Army, and the 4th Infantry Division prides itself on the "Steadfast and Loyal" Soldiers within its ranks who are not only meeting, but setting, the standards.

Sgt. Juan Tienda, an NCO for the Special Troops Battalion's training operations, Headquarters Support Company, STB, 4th Inf. Div., was recognized as the STB's "Player of the Week" during a command and staff briefing here Jan. 19, for his exceptional performance of his duties throughout the previous week.

"He is the Army's ideal NCO," said Tienda's supervisor, Staff Sgt. Nicholas Fontaine, a Fort Hood, Texas, native and the assistant NCO in charge of training operations, HSC, STB, 4th Inf. Div.

When a Soldier joins the ranks of the NCOs, he or she must be a hard worker who takes the initiative to perform any task and to assign tasks, and who is dedicated to upholding the Army values – loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Tienda personifies these qualities flawlessly, said Fontaine.

"I'm very patriotic," said Tienda, a Levelland, Texas, native. "Living the Army values reflects on who I am as a person, not just as a Soldier."

Tienda came into the Army as a tanker in 2002 and deployed as part of an armor unit with the Ivy Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07.

During his last deployment, he said he was recognized as the BCT's "Hero of the Week" for spotting improvised explosive devices that were overlooked by the driver and troop commander of his truck during a convoy.

"His attention to detail is beyond reproach," said Fontaine of Tienda's past achievements and current work ethic.

When Tienda volunteered to deploy early for the division's next rotation, he expected to have the opportunity to go off the base into the Baghdad community. Instead, he found himself in a new job, coordinating the battalion's training events. His eye for detail now has a different purpose: to ensure the safety of his fellow Soldiers as they practice for real-life scenarios, such as how to react in the event of a vehicle rollover.

"Even though I expected to be getting out there more, I'm still going to keep doing my job the best I can," Tienda said.

Tienda's positive outlook, professional demeanor and strong moral character make him not only an excellent leader and an asset to the Ironhorse team, but a distinguished "Player of the Week."
