444th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment
TEANECK, N.J. - It takes a lot of heart to do this job. The New Jersey Army National Guard’s 508th Military Police Company had their blood pumping as they trained to get certified in CPR and defibrillator use March 7 at the Teaneck Armory.
Troops from the 508th and instructors from Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck trained side-by-side to insure proper technique and equipment use.
“Being former military and now a paramedic, I know how important it is to properly perform CPR and use a defibrillator. It saves lives,” Said, Juan C. Marti, Training Center coordinator for the Holy Name Medical Center.
Although the certification process takes only a day, the return can last a lifetime.
“With this training, I feel that I would know what to do in a relevant situation,” said Spc. Eddie R. Sperling. “I am a Soldier in and out of uniform and I feel that I would be ready to help, if and when the time ever came.”
The training, which consisted on how to properly apply chest compressions and how to open a person’s restricted airway, is far more demanding than it sounds.
“If I see someone go down in a combat or non-combat situation, I would know what to do,” said, Pvt. Emily J. Konzelmann. “If anything were to happen, I know that my training would kick into effect and I would use everything I have learned, to help save a life, until the emergency medical team arrives.”
The Soldiers said they appreciated the certificates because they were earned, not just handed out.
“I love my job, and I love giving back to service members,” said Marti. “That’s why I am here on my own time and providing this service free of charge. I hope one day one of these Soldiers would catch me somewhere and tell me that because of what I taught them and because of what they learned, they were able to save a life.”
