RABASAARE, Estonia – U.S. Soldiers conducted a combined training exercise with Estonian forces Saturday, to help build skills and strengthen the force here in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

The exercise saw Dragoons from Iron Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment, conduct urban operations while Estonian forces defended the village.

“For the mission today, we are going to attack and destroy enemies who have seized power and have held hostage the legitimate government leaders of Estonia,” said 1st Sgt. Travis Quade, Iron Troop, 3rd Sqdn., 2 CR. “Overall, our mission is train and work together in case any real event in the world causes us to come here.”

American’s and Estonians have participated in Operation Atlantic Resolve since April 2014. Currently, 3rd Sqdn., 2 CR, is deployed in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to train with host nation forces while strengthening the United States’ alliance with it multinational partners.

“It allows the Estonians to see how we operate in an urban environment,” said Sgt. 1st Class Richard Rodriguez, platoon sergeant, Iron Troop, “to see our way of clearing rooms and establishing strongholds in a city. Hopefully, they can learn from our tactics and we can learn from their feedback. Everybody should learn something.”

Soldiers from the 2 CR Engineer Squadron also participated in the exercise.

“This training benefits the engineers because it gets us on the ground with our infantry counterparts and we get familiarization of integrating ourselves with them,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Pemberton, a 2 CR engineer currently attached to Iron Troop. “Infantrymen also get good training of realizing how we can benefit them on the battlefield.”

With urban operations complete, Iron Troop began field operations on Monday.

“It’s been an honor to be here in Estonia and train with the Estonian Defense forces,” said Rodriguez. “I’ve learned a lot, my Soldiers have learned a lot, and we are looking forward to coming back if we get invited here again.”

The training starting Monday will be Iron Troop’s last major field exercise with Operation Atlantic Resolve before being replaced later this month.
