GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Mass casualty response exercises bring return on investment of time and resources during large-scale state exercises, such as the ones which took place during Vigilant Guard South Carolina. One particular scenario brought together the City of Georgetown’s first responders, South Carolina’s National Guardsmen and the S.C. State Guard to the aid of simulated victims of a tornado March 8, 2015.
In the scenario, a tornado struck a nursing home and due to the magnitude of the disaster scene, the local fire department called for additional assistance from state agencies.
“The event is a large scale response for this department and it is a great way to see this kind of situation which we can have the possibility of occurring,” said Gaye Anne Tanner, Public Information Officer for Georgetown City Fire Department.
The victims were evaluated by the severity of their wounds by medical personnel assigned to the 169th Medical Group and the S.C. State Guard. Once evaluated (or triaged), the victims were given first aid and medically evacuated to receive further attention with the help of National Guard and local firefighters.
“The Air National Guard assisted in triaging and loading up the ambulances and comforting family members,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Cassandra Richardson, a critical care nurse.
“These types of weather events are known to happen here and training gives our crews the chance to respond effectively,” said Tanner.
