BAGHDAD, Iraq – A special release ceremony was held for 100 Iraqi detainees at Camp Cropper, Jan. 24.
The Iraqi deputy minister of education, Dr. Nihad Al-Jibouri, spoke to the releasees, wishing them well upon their return home. "I hope you are thinking positively to participate in rebuilding the country, because the Iraqi society will welcome you," he said.
The ceremony was a continuation of ongoing efforts by the government of Iraq and coalition forces, which are working together to foster goodwill and reconciliation while ensuring individuals are only released when they are deemed to no longer be an imperative threat to the security of Iraq.
All of the former detainees were released through a review board process, where they had the opportunity to address their individual cases personally. Each one also made a pledge to an Iraqi judge, swearing to maintain peace and good conduct in the future.
While in detention, the detainees had the opportunity to participate in activities, including basic education courses, religious discussions, vocational training and work for pay programs, designed to help them successfully reintegrate into Iraqi society upon their release.
An equal number of Sunni and Shiite detainees were released today. Following the ceremony, they were released in the Baghdad area.
In addition to the 100 detainees released today, 785 detainees have been released this month. In 2007, a total of 8,952 detainees were released.
