FORT BLISS, Texas - Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 391st Military Police Battalion, 300th Military Police Brigade, returned stateside March 17 at the Silas L. Copeland Arrival/Departure Air Control Group airfield after completing a mission to Guantanamo Naval Base, Cuba.
The Army Reserve unit made positive changes and made an impact to the GTMO community. Lt. Col. Roger Glenn, commander, 391st MP Battalion, commended his Soldiers for volunteering their personal time to plant trees and do volunteer work, despite the difficult routine of conducting internment and resettlement tasks.
“Soldiers are pretty busy on deployment, so for them to take the time away from their personal time, which includes communicating with their families, is pretty extraordinary,” said Glenn. “The most striking thing about the GTMO mission is the fact that Soldiers show such extraordinary restraint in dealing with detainees, in spite of what the detainees do to them, which is some pretty horrific things on a common daily basis. The restraint that they show in basically not reacting to any of that, is nothing short of amazing.”
Col. Richard Giles, commander, 300th MP Brigade, welcomed the unit as they deplaned and made their way to into the ADACG hangar as a light rain fell.
“We continue to support a long, long mission with some of the nation’s finest on a daily basis. It’s always a good day anytime that you can welcome Soldiers home and thank them for a job well done,” said Giles. “The mission that they have completed in Guantanamo Bay is a mission that is extremely important, difficult and thankless, and doing that job on a daily basis on a high level of attention that has to be there. It takes a lot of character, it takes a lot of competence, a lot of professionalism, to be able to do what they do day in and day out over there. I am very proud of each and every one of them for the job they have done and the job that they will continue to do as Army Reservists.”
HHC, 391st MP Battalion will head back to Ohio when they complete the demobilization process with the Mobilization and Deployment office of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security here.
