JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – “Kick left and right!”... Drops of sweat rolling down their bodies onto the floor with looks of determination chiseled onto their faces... “Punch left and right!”… Rhythmic breaths escaping from their mouths and sounds of motivation echoing throughout the room …“Oh yeah!”

The term working out is usually associated with treadmills and barbells, while people still continue to take on the more contemporary approach, some have elected to participate in different forms of physical fitness; one being cardio kickboxing.
Patrons throughout Joint Base Lewis-McChord meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 AM in the Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center for an hour of cardio kickboxing taught by Sharon Morejon, a fitness specialist.

“Classes like these benefit us because not only do you get to keep in shape, but it gives you a chance to meet new people,” said Ailene Begley, a military spouse and a regular participant for the cardio kickboxing class. “Also Sharon has a way of keeping it interesting and keeping us motivated.”

Motivational phrases like “C’mon everyone!” and “Don’t stop!” were shouted over the music blasted by the loud speakers as Morejon energetically led from the front.

“I just want everyone to feel comfortable in their skin in here and focus on themselves, and I want everyone to participate,” said Morejon with a smile. “I want people to know that anyone can do this!”

The classes are attended by a variety of people ranging from men to women, young to old, military to civilian, but they generally have the same opinion when asked about the importance of such classes being taught here on post.

“These classes definitely need to continue to be given because it helps everyone in their own way,” said Begley. “Some wives seek solace in coming here while there husbands are deployed, some people do it just to stay healthy and lose weight, and some people do it just because it’s fun!”

Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center also offers other free classes throughout the week with the intent of having something appeasing to all different types of people.

“I think that the variety is very important because when focusing on one particular fitness people become complacent in their exercise or they plateau,” said Morejon. “When they mix it up and add variety they get better results.”

To obtain more information about the cardio kickboxing class or any other classes offered, feel free to call the staff at Jensen Gym at phone number 253-967-5975.
