CAMP WALKER, South Korea - On a Saturday morning, the basketball court was filled with 52 individuals taking part in the wellness expo and fitness class at the Camp Walker Kelly Fitness Center. The event was organized by Staff Sgt. Jerome Lewis, 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command knowledge management noncommissioned officer in charge, and Orlando, Fla., native.

“The event went very well,” said Lewis. “A lot of people enjoyed it and took something from it.”

USAG Daegu Sports and Fitness and 65th Medical Brigade provided displays on Army Wellness Programs. Representatives provided interactive training with calorie quiz games and lists of identifying features for safer supplement use.

Key leaders spoke on the different components of fitness before the workout portion of the expo. Among the leaders was the chief of area IV physical fitness who spoke about recovery from injuries, who stressed the importance of identifying pain and pursuing medical feedback before continuing to injure the area to the point that it causes chronic pain. The community health nurse spoke on the importance of using the performance triad. The performance triad emphasizes overall fitness with your diet, exercise and sleep.

“When you feel like you’re physically fit, the stressful days at work are a lot easier,” said Col. James Kazmierczak, the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command chief of staff and guest speaker. “You feel better about yourself, you feel better about your surroundings, and you feel better about your family. Physical resiliency is so important and hats off to everybody for coming out here to participate in this.”

After the wellness expo guest speakers, Lewis led the group in a hip-hop spin class. Granola bars, bananas and bottled water were laid on tables for anyone taking part in the fitness classes to have to refuel after the workouts. After a break of water and fruit, the group moved into abdominal development where Lewis led the group in alternate exercises to focus on the core. The event ended with stretching and a small raffle for the individuals who participated.

“The volunteers have said that a lot have people have asked for contact information to get further assistance,” said Lewis. “People have reached out to me about meeting their own goals [and] the end state was definitely met.”
