BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – Wranglers from the 4th Resolute Support Sustainment Brigade Women’s Council, hosted a Women’s History Month Conference at the Coalition MWR Theater, March 28, 2015 on Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan.
The purpose of the event was to recognize the accomplishments of women throughout history, the important changes they have made, and to inspire young Soldiers that nothing can stand in the way of their success.
The event started with several Soldiers from the Woman’s Council speaking about inspirational women such as Stephanie Kwolek the inventor of Kevlar and Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody the first female four-star general in the U.S. Army.
The vice-president of the council, Spc. Shila Jones a St Louis native, joined the council so that she could give a voice for other junior enlisted Soldiers and bring awareness of the contributions of women to fellow Soldiers.
Jones’s presentation was about Cathay Williams, the first female to enlist in the U.S. Army during the civil war who disguised herself as a man in order to join the Buffalo Soldiers.
“Now that we have this month to celebrate us (women) and the accomplishments that women do all over the world and not just the military, it shows that we can still do things that men can do,” said Jones.
After presentations from other members of the Women’s Council, guest speakers Col. Stephanie E. Gradford, the United States Forces-Afghanistan, Bagram Garrison Commander and Sgt. Maj. Llirenelli Mari-Ciriaco, the sergeant major of the 573rd Construction Management Team, told Soldiers about their success in the military over the years.
Gradford encouraged Soldiers to be steadfast, always push themselves, strive to be the best Soldiers they can be, and not allow boundaries to be put in place just because of their gender.
“You must believe in yourself and work hard and never quit,” said Gradford. “I think about the men and women who have served in the defense of our nation, and it’s important for us to take a moment and reflect back on some of the incredible women who have given so much.”
After the speakers had finished, Soldiers were treated to refreshments and snacks before reflecting on the sacrifices and contributions that women have made throughout history which encourage them to never limit themselves to any type of gender boundaries.
