SAN ANTONIO - Members from the Department of Defense Hearing Center of Excellence (HCE), located on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, educated more than 700 children and their families on preventing noise-induced hearing loss at a local museum, March 28-29, 2015.
Through hands-on activities and information stations, attendees were educated on anatomy and physiology, hazardous noise level identification, sound and loud noise effect and hearing loss prevention.
Once visitors earned stickers from all four stations, they were given a coloring book, ear erasers and the opportunity to meet Iron Man.
Iron Man was supporting a child who previously did not like to wear his cochlear implants because his favorite superheroes did not have them. Sporting some bright, fluorescent ear muffs, Iron Man demonstrated how hearing protection was necessary and could be cool.
Four hearing loss prevention strategies emphasized were: Walk Away, Turn it Down, Wear Hearing Protection, and Cover Your Ears.
According to the HCE's website, "The Hearing Center of Excellence's mission is to heighten readiness and continuously improve the health and quality of life of service members and veterans."
Through the educational outreach event, participants became more familiar with the various noise hazards and better equipped to combat them.
