MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Hundreds of colored plastic eggs littered the ground as dozens of children awaited the start of the 2nd Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25 Easter egg hunt and Family Day aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 2, 2015.

“Today we are conducting Family Day for all of our Marines and their families,” said Sasha Mlak, the Family Readiness Officer with the unit. “This is an opportunity for family members to meet and spend time with the service members their significant other works with.”

The FRO is in charge of helping communicate the command’s intent to the families of the Marines within the unit. They also help organize events to bring the unit together in an effort to build camaraderie and introduce different families to one another.

“We have worked really hard these past couple weeks,” said Lt. Col. Bruce Morales, the commanding officer of 2nd Supply Battalion. “Now we have the opportunity to get out of the offices and meet each other and their families.”

The command provided a lot of excitement for the children to enjoy. A few of these activities were; a face painting booth, an Easter egg hunt and a bouncy house.

“The reason this is so important to us, is it gives everyone an opportunity to meet new people within the unit,” Mlak said. “This allows spouses to interact with other people, and gives them a chance to feel more like a big family when they can make friends with other family members of this unit.”

The event started with a massive Easter egg hunt, with more than 500 eggs for the children to find. Five of the Easter eggs contained special tickets that allowed the child to redeem them for a special basket that contained toys. After the hunt concluded, service members and their spouses mingled amongst the group and introduced each other in an attempt to make new Marines to the unit feel welcome and build the units cohesion.

“We are one big family,” Morales said. “Interacting with each other and getting to know each other is just another way we can keep our morale strong.”

“We try to do one big event every year,” Mlak said. “We do Christmas parties, Jane Wayne Days and field meets. We also try to do holiday parties whenever we can.”
