CHERRY POINT, N.C. - April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month for the Department of Defense.

Marine Corps Community Services is sponsoring a 5K, April 17, to help raise awareness about sexual assault and encourage members of the Cherry Point community to help prevent it, and understand how to respond appropriately when sexual assaults occur.

This joint, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Commemorative Run provides an opportunity to run along a course with signs of silent witnesses highlighting facts, misconceptions, and the devastating impact of sexual assault.

Major General Robert F. Hedelund, 2nd MAW commanding general, opens the event with the reminder, while April is sexual assault awareness and prevention month – we all need to do something every month, and every day to eradicate sexual assault from our ranks.

“Every Marine and Sailor who serves with us are proud of their accomplishment of becoming one of the few. Sexual assault is a complete and total contradiction of the core values we hold so dear,” said Hedelund. “We will stay left of an incident with bystander intervention and raising awareness, while establishing command climate emphasizes prevention, proper response to victims and zero tolerance for the offenders. Eliminating sexual assault continues to take a dedicated effort. I challenge all to know your part, do your part and most of all remain dedicated to this cause, we owe it to our Marines, Sailors, families and our community.”

The 5K is free and open to all active duty service members and Department of Defense employees at the air station. Participants may register for the run as individuals or as four person teams. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place individuals and teams.

To register, visit http://mccscherrypoint.com/events/SAAM5K or call (252) 466-6336.
