FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Soldiers from across Fort Drum attended a Women’s History Month observance, hosted by the 10th Sustainment Brigade, March 26 at the Commons.
This year’s observance was dedicated to Chief Warrant Officer 3 Lori Hill, who received the Distinguished Flying Cross for her actions March 2006.

Hill was piloting an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter in Iraq when insurgents fired toward her and another helicopter. She was providing suppressive fire for the troops fighting on the ground when her helicopter was hit by enemy fire, but she continued to provide overwatch support and communications for the ground forces.

Her aircraft was again hit and a machine-gun round struck her ankle.

She continued to support the ground forces for as long as her damaged aircraft would allow before landing safely, saving both her crew and helicopter.

The theme of the observance was “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives,” and it focused on women who made great contributions to women inside and outside of the military.
Guest speaker for the observance was Lt. Col. LaCher M. Green, commander of 10th Sustainment Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade.

Green noted that women have served in the military since 1775 in medical, laundering and cooking capacities. Some even served in combat, either alongside their husbands or disguised as men.

Several female Soldiers wore costumes depicting influential women in U.S. history. Each Soldier made her way to a microphone and explained the history of the woman she was portraying. Attendees then had an opportunity to guess the identity of each influential woman.

Col. David V. Gillum, 10th Sustainment Brigade commander, praised each of the Soldiers, saying he was impressed by their performances.

The women represented were Molly Pitcher, Frances Clalin, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Dr. Mary E. Walker, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, Army Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester, Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown and retired Army Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody.

“We must acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of pioneering women from the past and recognize their impact on the force of today. These trailblazers cleared the road for an Army that will soon see women Soldiers competing for the elite title of Army Ranger,” Green said as she paused to scan the room with a smile on her face. “I am excited. Are you?”
