SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Fresh water is an important resource. It is used every day for cleaning, cooking and hydration. Access to fresh water can be limited in countries, but for U.S. service members participating in Beyond the Horizon 2015, the 14th Quartermaster Company out of Greensburg, Pa., is enabling that access from a local well.
The quartermaster company is providing potable water to service members assigned to Task Force Northstar participating in BTH, a humanitarian and civic assistance mission, in which engineer and medical units are building schools, a medical clinic and providing medical care to local citizens and their livestock.
“We are here to provide water resources for the engineers and other sustainment personnel involved in this year's BTH,” said Army Sgt. Justin Hultz, Noncommissioned officer in charge with the 14th.
The quartermaster company is using a Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit, allowing the unit to produce up to approximately 1,800 gallons of fresh water per hour. Chlorine levels are checked daily to ensure the water is safe to drink and use for personal hygiene.
With the construction projects spread throughout El Salvador, water buffaloes are filled daily and taken to each work site to ensure the service members have access to fresh water.
It is hot out here so we want to make sure they have access to fresh water, said Hultz. They are working hard out there and need water to replenish sweat loss from their bodies.
With temperatures reaching above 90 degrees daily, the quartermaster company has also scrubbed down a pool and refilled it with fresh water for the use of service members.
“I think they will be excited to be able to jump in at the end of a hard day of work,” said Hultz. “I think they will appreciate it.”
The purification unit will continue to conduct their mission, providing fresh water for fellow service members participating in BTH15 while sharpening their skills for future missions.
