FORT HOOD, Texas – Soldiers from the 3d Cavalry Regiment performed skits acting out possible scenarios where sexual assault and sexual harassment may occur to create discussion amongst members of the Regiment about the safest courses of actions to take when faced with these adversities. The performances were held April 16 at the Phantom Warrior Center on post.
The actors were volunteers from the 3d Cav. Regt. They performed four different skits and paused the acting to discuss the situations with the audience. Sgt. 1st Class Ian Furman, the unit Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, engaged members of the Regiment about their opinions regarding the skits in between each set. The conversation was abundant and the lessons were clear. Furman’s objective was to get Soldiers; aware of bad situations, and how to prevent harassment and assault from occurring by both the perpetrators and bystanders.
The skits included different scenarios to encompass an array possible experiences. The first act addressed how sexual harassment could be avoided at work. Situations also included how Soldiers can protect themselves and their buddies from getting into a bad situation at a nightclub. The next act was slightly darker and followed a husband and wife where the marriage was crumbling and a sexual assault occurred between married spouses. The final act was darker still, where one male soldier used a date rape drug to assault his long-time friend.
Col. Cameron Cantlon, commander of the 3d Cav. Regt., provided closing remarks for the event. Cantlon was pleased with the level of participation from his Regiment and impressed with acting skills by the troops. Cantlon stated that the effort put forth in the performance was the reason why the crowd was so engaged.
The entire unit, of over 2,500 Soldiers, was required to attend the performance. The actors put on three different iterations throughout the day.
