TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama National Guard promoted Steven M. Davenport to the rank of lieutenant colonel April 19 in Tuscaloosa. He is presently the operations officer for the 31st Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Brigade, Alabama National Guard.

Col. Lee M. Ellis, commander 31st CBRN Brigade, gave the opening remarks welcoming family and distinguished visitors.

“Maj. Davenport has taken basic readiness to a new level, while taking care of Soldiers,” said Ellis.

Distinguished guests included Alabama National Guard retirees Maj. Gen. Charles Gailes, Brig. Gen. David R. Brown, and Brig. Gen. Wendell McLain.

Davenport expressed his appreciation to family and friends in attendance. Then he asked the Soldiers of the 31st CBRN, who are preparing for a training event, to thank their families for their support.

With this promotion, Davenport will relieve Col. Ronald M. Neely as deputy brigade commander for the 31st CBRN Brigade.

“My job is to take care of Soldiers. You are the reason I have a job. We are getting ready for Vibrant Response 15 (Vibrant Response 15 is an annual exercise hosted around the Indianapolis area designed to simulate a nuclear catastrophe); this is what we are all about, and I promise you – I won’t waste your time,” said Davenport.

Davenport enlisted as an E-1 with the Navy Reserves before transferring to the Alabama National Guard where he received his commission as an officer. In addition to his chemical, nuclear, biological training, Davenport received training as a Military Police officer and Army field artillery officer.

Davenport has one tour in Afghanistan with numerous awards including the Bronze Star. Davenport is a 2001 graduate of Troy University.
