CAMP SHERMAN, Ohio - The members of Alpha Company, 216th Engineer Battalion began moving into their new armory on Narrows Road Dec. 3.

The new facility, located at Camp Sherman, includes a maintenance building, a 10,000 square foot barracks and an over 38,000 square foot armory.

The new armory will include a larger kitchen area, more office space, classrooms and a larger drill floor.

The unit, based in Chillicothe, consists of carpenters, electricians, plumbers and heavy equipment operators.

Capt. Donald Westfall, unit commander, said the new armory is incredible.

“We have a great location, and I feel that the new facility will be great addition to the community and the Ohio Army National Guard. I’m looking forward to showing it off,” Westfall said. “It helps the troops understand how important we are to the community when they see that they are being moved into a facility that will be in operation for the next 100 years. It’s an honor to be able to be here.”

Members of the unit are excited – but some have mixed emotions as well.

“It is sad to move out of the old armory, which has so many memories and that we have called home for so many years. It is exciting to move into a new home and to be able to create many new memories,” said Unit Supply Sgt. Heather Newberry, of Chillicothe.

During the weekend, Alpha Company had its annual Christmas party. Soldiers brought their family members, enjoyed a holiday dinner and even had a special visit from Santa Claus who took time out of his busy schedule to spend some time with the children.
