WASHINGTON - Col. William J. Walker assumed command of the District of Columbia National Guard land component command from Brig. Gen. Arthur Hinaman during a change of command ceremony presided over by Maj. Gen. Errol Schwartz, commanding general, District of Columbia National Guard, at the District of Columbia Armory April 25.
Hinaman served as land component commander since October 2009, and according to Schwartz, was the longest serving current Army commander in the National Guard. His previous assignments include commander, 74th Troop Command; deputy director of the joint staff; and state Army aviation officer. While deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Hinaman served as the commander, Air Corps Advisory Group in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Walker's key assignments include vice commander, Partnership for the Americas, Brigade Joint Task Force-Jamaica; chief of staff, District of Columbia Army National Guard; deputy commander, Joint Task Force 57th Presidential Inauguration; and commander, Mobilization Augmentation Command. He has served as an operations officer in the Pentagon in support of Operation Noble Eagle following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
In his new role, Walker is responsible for the overall readiness, training, maintenance and operational employment of nearly 1,500 Soldiers assigned or attached to Army units of the District of Columbia National Guard.
