GRAYLING, Mich. — Pyrotechnics used during a training event on Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center sparked a small wildfire that burned 700 acres of the 5,261-acre Multi-Purpose Range Complex, April 25, 2015.
A U.S. Marine Corps unit training at the MPRC used a pyrotechnic simulator that landed in the training area north of Kyle Lake Road and south of Bucks East-West Road.
Camp Grayling military personnel were the first to respond to the fire. The matter was turned over to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. In consultation with DNR, it was determined to execute a suppression burn given the current conditions. The Lovell Fire Department also responded to the site to monitor the fire.
“This is not an unusual event due to training requirements,” said Col. Thomas Perison, Camp Grayling installation commander. “Camp Grayling has protocols in place to respond to these types of situations. At no time were personnel, buildings or equipment in danger during the agreed-to suppression burn in conjunction with the DNR recommendations.”
According to Jim Fisher of DNR, fire and natural barriers were used as a suppression strategy until the wildfire burned out.
There were no injuries and no buildings or equipment were damaged.
Camp Grayling assesses fire protection levels twice daily and monitors risk levels associated with the use of pyrotechnics in other training missions.
