JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Gunfire and mortars echoed, as Soldiers from 610th Engineer Support Company (ESC) conduct the company’s inaugural Ghost Rider Stakes April 16, 2015.
During the Warrior Skills competition, twelve teams competed to earn the title of best Ghost Rider Stakes Team and Soldier.
Each group consisted of three to four Soldiers, where Team Leaders were able to utilize their skills to lead. The purpose of this competition was to provide Soldiers with a better understanding with their strengths and weaknesses and to build camaraderie among each team.
Prior to the competition, the Soldiers had a quick rundown of what they needed to anticipate at each station.
In order to prepare for Ghost Rider Stakes, each platoon practiced the stations in the company the day before the competition. The company also went through the CS chamber, refreshing Soldiers on how to dawn their protective masks, and a grenade range, certifying Soldiers on grenadier marksmanship to help them at the weapons station.
The competition began at 0500 with the check points and seven different stations being set up, which consisted of CBRN, Medical, Weapons, Maintenance, Tactical Movement and Communications with approximately six miles of travel around OP 10 in the JBLM training area.
The competition started with a PT Test, where Soldiers did two minutes of pushups and situps. Afterward, Soldiers were provided with their points upon completion of the stations, reaching each station using Land Navigation.
During the entire training exercise, the Soldiers wore full combat gear, consisting of IOTV, primary weapon, kneepads, elbow pads, protective mask and assault pack.
“Each team was expected to finish each station in 15-30 minutes,” said Lt. Larraine Palesky, 3rd Platoon, 610th ESC, “by showing their required knowledge and skills to complete each lane.”
According to Spc. Tien Trinh, 610th ESC Horizontal Construction Engineer, his group “delegated every task evenly according to their individual strengths.”
Additionally, Ghost Rider Stakes was developed to help Soldiers understand the importance of training.
Trinh said, “The training was important because it showed Soldiers our strong and weak points, so we can maintain our combat readiness.”
The intent of the Ghost Rider Stakes was to “test Soldiers on their basic Warrior tasks and drills, as well as their engineer level tasks,” according to Palesky.
Each station’s officer in charge and noncommissioned officer in charge were tasked to build their own obstacle using their assigned Warrior skill.
The competition provided the Soldiers with a better understanding of their strengths and what they can improve on to be combat ready.
At the end of the day, Spc. Trudgeon demonstrated his skills amongst his fellow Soldiers and earned the best Ghost Rider Stakes Soldier title. His team, with Cpl. Armstrong and Spc. Blocker, worked together and were named the best Ghost Rider Team.
