HOLLY RIDGE, N.C. - Marine Corps Outlying Field Camp Davis hosted a community festival celebrating its 75th anniversary, April 25, 2015.

The celebratory festival showcased several historic tours of the installation, as well as informational displays and local area vendors selling an assortment of goods and refreshments.

“It is great to see the turnout of people interested in the history that Camp Davis offers and to be able to speak with them about first-hand experiences,” said Clennie Davis, 102 years old and one of the original employees of Camp Davis when it opened.

Camp Davis was built in 1940 by the United States Army and served as an anti-aircraft artillery training facility consisting of more than 3,000 buildings on more than 40,000 acres of land.

More recently, Camp Davis serves as an outlying landing field and is used by Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River for training that includes helicopter assault landing exercises and aircraft carrier landings because of its remote location.

“The main reason I believed it was so important to get this put together was to honor the survivors of Camp Davis and educate the local public, who showed a large amount of interest and support, about Camp Davis’ history,” said Dorothy Royal, Camp Davis anniversary festival organizer.

About a year ago, Royal ran across a flyer from the 50th anniversary of Camp Davis and upon realizing that the 75th anniversary was right around the corner decided to organize a celebratory festival. After she began reaching out to the local area and seeing their interest in such an event, Royal knew this was too big of an opportunity to let go.

“Other than the weather throwing us a few curve balls, everything went great today,” said Royal. “We had a great turn out from vendors and visitors and look forward to hosting something similar to this again next year.”
