CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - “For professional achievement and sustained superior performance,” the narrator’s voice rang out above the Marines and sailors gathered at attention around him. They listened proudly and intently as the narrator continued to describe the battalion’s accomplishments and triumphs. Behind him stood a massive silver trophy inscribed with the name of one of the Marine Corps most beloved veterans: Lt. Gen. Lewis “Chesty” Puller. “The exceptional professional ability, steadfast initiative and total dedication to the mission exhibited by the Marines and sailors of 2nd Supply Battalion reflected great credit upon the unit and were in keeping with the highest traditions with the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service,” the narrator concluded with pride.
Major General William D. Beydler, commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force, presented the prestigious Chesty Puller award to 2nd Supply Battalion for sustained superior performance during a ceremony aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 28, 2015.
“It just goes to show you the hard work and dedication that our Marines and sailors put forth every day,” said Sgt. Maj. Rodger D. Newcomb, the 2nd Supply Battalion sergeant major and native of Owensboro, Kentucky. “They bust their tails to do the best that they can; this award is validation for them.”
Beydler told the battalion that they were making excellent progress toward II MEF’s perpetual goals of readiness, standards and values. During the past year, 2nd Supply Battalion has executed intermediate supply, ammunition, medical logistics and distribution support to both garrison and deployed II MEF operations.
Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Morales, the commanding officer of 2nd Supply Battalion and native of Guayama, Puerto Rico, described how important accomplishment of the battalion’s mission is to the success of II MEF. The battalion’s sole purpose is to provide direct support to II MEF operations through the distribution and warehousing of military goods and equipment, he said.
“This award means that we have not forgotten to do the little things that make us great, at any rank or capacity,” Morales said.
Morales and Newcomb sounded like proud fathers as they spoke of the appreciation they felt for their unit’s steadfast resolve. This award belongs to every Marine and sailor in the battalion, they said. At the conclusion of the ceremony, every Marine and sailor present was invited to approach the trophy and place their hands on the award that they had so honorably earned.
