SOUTHWEST ASIA – Sawdust collected on the tables and floor. The music playing from the stereo in the middle of the room could barely be heard over the saws and drills. Airmen cut boards, painted shelving units and shaped metal for heating and ventilation duct work.

Another project was being completed. And another project was about to begin. Their name might not run across the headlines very often, but the work being completed by the Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Structures shop is visible all around us.

“We play a big part in the mission here,” said Master Sgt. Taun, ECES structures superintendent. “We maintain and build a lot of things here that make it easier and convenient for others to do their jobs.”

The Structures shop is responsible for keeping the base facilities in working order, constructing and repairing minor things from broken doors and signs to major projects like replacing roofs and runways.

“We keep the base in one piece, and make sure it doesn’t fall apart,” said Senior Airman Raul, a structures journeyman. “Our job is to make sure everyone has the capability to do their job in their facility.”

Deployed locations often go through many phases, from bedding down troops to standing up permanent structures. Part of Structures job is improving the temporary facilities and making them permanent.

“One of our current projects is to improve the pharmacy and how they do business,” said Senior Airman Raul. “There isn’t a lot of space in there to support customers, so we are doubling the shelving space to allow for more supplies and medications which is allowing the pharmacist’s more available room to work in.”

Another major project currently underway is the renovation of Roy’s flight kitchen.

“The facility was in bad shape and needed major repairs, so we gutted the building out and are in the process of finishing up most of the work,” said Senior Airman Raul. “It’s a lot of hard work. But it’s rewarding because there is so much going here and you want to give those Airmen a break from the heat and the stress. It’ll be an enjoyable place to eat and relax when it’s finished.”

The Structure shop has done more than improve work facilities, they’ve improved the quality of life for every Airmen on the base. They made several improvements to the Thirsty Camel area, including the installation of a large projection screen to view movies and sporting events.

“We’re making this place better than how we found it,” said Master Sergeant Taun. “We’re making it easier for those who are away from home.”
