POINT LOMA, Calif. - Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 1 held a change of command ceremony in Point Loma, Calif., May 1

During the ceremony, Cmdr. Jeremy F. Thompson relieved Cmdr. Robert R. Porter III as commanding officer of EODMU 1.

Porter addressed the Sailors assigned to EODMU 1 during his remarks.

"To the crew, I can’t say thank you enough," said Porter. “Your professionalism at the organizational and personal level has allowed us to dedicate our energy to the mission, facilities and training. When we were deployed, the mobile unit didn’t skip a beat. Every day you show up to work and do your job and you do it extremely well. I’m very proud of the command that I’m turning over to Cmdr. Thompson.”

Porter, who was commissioned through the Navy’s Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST), is a 1996 graduate of Boston University. His next assignment will be at Commander, Mine Counter Measures Squadron 7.

Thompson thanked the crew of EODMU 1, EOD leadership, and other EOD personnel in attendance for their prior and future support.

"Most of all I want to thank the men and women of mobile unit one,” said Thompson. “During my turn over, I had the pleasure to meet most of you and what struck me the most is the clear and uncommon level of commitment to the Navy, to the diverse missions of our mobile unit, and to each other. You are relentless in the pursuit to be better and meet the commander’s intent while caring for your shipmates and your families, and I couldn’t ask for anything more coming into command.”

Thompson is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and received his commissioned in the Navy in 1993.

EODMU 1 provides operational explosive ordnance disposal capability for location and identification, rendering safe, recovery, field evaluation and disposal of all explosive ordnance including chemical and nuclear weapons across the globe.
