EASTOVER, S.C . — A change of command ceremony for the 59th Troop Command, South Carolina National Guard, took place Sunday, May 3, 2015, on the parade field at the Armed Forces Reserve Center at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover, S.C.

Surrounded by friends, family and fellow Soldiers, the outgoing commander of the 59th Troop Command, Col. Charles Moore, passed command to Lt. Col. Robert Carruthers. Moore assumed command of the brigade’s 3,200 Soldiers in 2014.

During the ceremony, Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr. the Adjutant General of South Carolina, spoke about Moore and his time as commander.

“You and your staff did a great job,” said Livingston. “We tested you in combat and numerous other missions and you passed them all in great fashion.”

During a change of command ceremony, the passing of the colors signifies the changing of responsibility from one commander to another. It also shows honor and respect to the outgoing commander while showing trust and allegiance to the incoming commander.

“To all of our Soldiers, you have honored me with your selfless service,” said Moore. “Thank you for the honor of serving you.”

Carruthers, the incoming commander, has held numerous leadership roles throughout his military career to include battalion commander of 1st Battalion, 118th Infantry and deputy commander of McCrady Training Center.

“I am honored and humbled to be entrusted with this responsibility,” said Carruthers, as he addressed Soldiers, honored guests and families.

As commander of the 59th Troop Command, Carruthers will lead over 3,000 Soldiers ranging from military police and support personnel to transportation and engineers.

Carruthers concluded, “To the Soldiers of the 59th Troop Command – I pledge my service to you as a leader.”
