FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend took command of the XVIII Airborne Corps during a change of command ceremony May 5 on Fort Bragg’s Main Post Parade Field.

Townsend’s previous assignment was as the commander of the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.

Gen. Mark A. Milley, commanding general of Forces Command, presided over the ceremony.

“Today marks the conclusion of yet another chapter in the Corps’ storied history,” said Milley. “XVIII Airborne Corps is an incredible organization that strikes fast and hard, and always brings victory.”

The sun shined down on the parade field as outgoing commander Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson passed the unit’s colors to Milley, who then passed the colors to Townsend, completing the transfer of authority.

Following the formal ceremony, Anderson thanked the troops and the Fort Bragg community for their team effort in making the Corps successful.

“I am filled with a profound sense of satisfaction and pride knowing this Corps lived up to all its expectations and accomplished the mission to standard,” said Anderson.

Townsend followed Anderson with brief remarks to the audience, thanking him and the Fort Bragg community for the warm welcome.

“I’ll make one promise today: When the next crisis comes, and the phones start ringing, the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg will be ready.”
