MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - A peaceful meal was shared by more than 200 people of various faiths during the National Day of Prayer breakfast here, May 7.
The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman. Since then, it has been an annual day of religious observance held every first Thursday in May.
“It is such an important part of our history,” said Cmdr. David Shirk, command chaplain at Cherry Point. “At some of the most critical times in our nation’s history, when everything was on the line, presidents called for prayer.”
Shirk initiated the all-faiths event with a blessing for the service members and the food. Various denominations were represented during the event and read prayers and verses from their respective books.
“I liked hearing from all the different religious beliefs,” said Cpl. Erica N. Harris, a communications operator with Marine Wing Support Squadron 274. “It is important for us to reflect back on our foundation and the core of our beliefs.”
The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band played and were accompanied by Bonnie Morden, a church musician. Both played a variety of music for attendees to enjoy.
“I hope when people look at this event it gives them strength and a sense of hope,” said Capt. Russell Graef, the 2nd MAW command chaplain. “People are looking to God for leadership, strength and guidance. When people see that, it is a humbling and encouraging thing.”
