    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Tension runs high as 10 to 15 Marines stand their post at a gate, yelling orders to each other and commands to a simulated crowd. Suddenly, an object is thrown through the air at the Marines, the crowd is no longer peaceful and a mock riot breaks out.

This was only a portion of the training conducted by a platoon size element of Marines from Bravo Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team Company, Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, who participated in a mission rehearsal exercise at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., May 4–8.

The MRX served as a culmination of months of hard work leading up to the Marines being graded by outside observers.

“We are training as part of the fleet anti-terrorism security teams to be able to reinforce not only embassies worldwide but consulates and anything that is a U.S. interest,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Ray, a platoon sergeant with the company. “We go through a lot of scenarios we would face in real world missions.”

The training exercise consisted of riot control, defending an embassy, gas attacks, and re-capturing a compound. A simulated riot which tested the Marines began when the role players tried to find weak points at the perimeter following a mock funeral service allowing the environment to get out of control.

“The role players are just making it more realistic for the Marines to understand the whole scenario,” said Sgt. Neil Anderson, a training noncommissioned officer with the company. The Marines rotated through shifts of standing post, reacting, and their sleep cycle. To make everything as realistic as possible, the Marines averaged two hours of sleep per night throughout the exercise.

“Bravo Company is trained to a very high standard; we made sure they were ready for the MRX,” said Anderson. “Bravo Company trained very hard during the ORE to prepare themselves for the MRX.”

An operational readiness exercise consists of the unit measuring itself on its ability to perform the mission. The ORE consists several weeks of intense training with Bravo Company evaluating itself in preparation for the MRX.

The exercise left the Marines confident with their skill sets.
According to Ray, the feeling around the exercise was that the training has them well prepared for real-world scenarios.

“This is a really good platoon. They’ve put in a lot of hard work and they give 100 percent effort all the time,” said Ray.
