MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Young faces lit up with excitement as the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band played melodies and answered questions at Creekside Elementary School, May 11.

“We try to do this as often as our schedule allows,” said Staff Sgt. Robert Brooks, the assistant drum major with the 2nd MAW band. “We think it is very important, not only to influence these young children, but for them to take an interest in music and show them the different opportunities the Marine Corps has to offer.”

Marines with the band visited fifth-graders and shared with them their musical experience and talent. During the visit, students asked questions and where able to see a side to the Marine Corps that they may not have been exposed to. Students asked questions ranging from what they do in the Marine Corps to the specifics of the instruments they can play.

“They get excited to see us play and explain to them how the instruments work,” said Brooks. “Many of them do not know the Corps even has this opportunity available for musicians.”

Prior to entering middle school, the students are able to choose to enter join the school band.

“These visits helps the children decide if it is something they are genuinely interested in doing in middle school and maybe later on as adults.” said Reggie Barnes, a music teacher at Creekside Elementary School.

According to Barnes, the school has an advantage of having the air station near and available for visits like these.

“The faculty is thankful for the opportunities provided by the Marines for students to learn and interact with them,” said Barnes. “They share experiences and knowledge that a lot of us have not had, helps us understand more and grow closer together as a community. Not everyone gets the opportunity to interact with Marines locally in environments such as these.”

Since its establishment in 1941, the 2nd MAW Band has provided support for the wing by performing in over 50,000 events including both military and civilian ceremonies. The Band maintains close ties to the local community and promotes the positive impact music can bring to others.
