NEW YORK - Sailors and Coast Guardsmen participated in the 97th annual Staten Island Memorial Day Parade, May 25.
The service members were joined by Boy and Girl Scout troops, veterans groups and Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets over the four-mile parade route.
“My dad is a retired command master chief,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Joshua Bryant. “(He) would be honored to be here today. I’m here to honor all those who have served before me.”
Memorial Day is an opportunity for American’s to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Many service members – past and present – chose to participate in the parade as a way of honoring those veterans.
“I’ve participated in more than 20 Memorial Day parades over the years,” said retired Senior Chief Mess Specialist James Brown. “I do it to show my support for the troops who serve now. These parades honor all of our vets who have given their lives to defend our freedom.”
Fleet Week New York, now in its 27th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services.
